Don Young was born in Meridian, Calif., and resides in Fort Yukon, Alaska. He received a bachelor's degree from California State University at Chico in 1958.
Before his election to Congress, Young was an elementary school teacher and a riverboat captain. He also served on the city council and as mayor of Fort Yukon City. He served in the Alaska House from 1967 to 1971, and in the state Senate from 1971 to 1973.
He was elected to the U.S. House during a 1973 special election and was re-elected to 15 consecutive terms. Young and his wife, Lula, have two children.
