Ethan Berkowitz was born in San Francisco, Calif., and now lives in Anchorage. He received a bachelor's degree from Harvard College in 1983 and a master's degree from Cambridge University in 1986. He first came to Alaska in 1990 after getting his law degree from Hastings College, and he served as a law clerk for the Alaska Court of Appeals.
Since then he's spent time all over the state either hauling nets and picking fish on commercial boats in Bristol Bay, herding reindeer in the Aleutians or traveling cross the state on a snow machine.
He and his wife, Mara have two children.
