Mike Rogers was born in Hammond, Ind., and resides in Saks, Ala. He earned a bachelor's in political science and psychology and a master's in public administration from Jacksonville State University.

Elected to the Calhoun County Commission at age 28, he became the first Republican and the youngest person ever to serve there.

He received a law degree from Birmingham School of Law. Rogers spent three years in a general practice law firm before starting his own firm, which is among the largest in Anniston, Ala.

Rogers began representing central Alabama's 36th district in the state House in 1994 and was elected minority leader in 1998. He first considered running for Congress against GOP Rep. Bob Riley in 1996, but Riley reportedly talked him out of it, assuring him he would only stay for six years.

Riley successfully ran for governor, kept his word and enthusiastically endorsed the Rogers campaign a major boost from a popular politician.

He and his wife, Beth, have three children.
