Artur Davis, a native of Montgomery, Ala., left the state to earn his bachelor's degree at Boston University and law degree at Harvard. During college, he interned for the late Alabama Sen. Howell Heflin.
Davis returned to Alabama to practice law, working at the Southern Poverty Law Center and clerking for Myron Thompson, one of the state's first black federal judges.
Davis served four years as an assistant U.S. attorney before moving to private practice in Birmingham, Ala., where he focused on criminal defense and workplace discrimination.
He sought the Democratic nomination in 2000, lost that effort and won in 2002 over a Libertarian opponent.
