Vivian Davis Figures was born in Mobile, Ala., and continues to call the Gulf Coast city home. She received her bachelor's degree from the University of New Haven in 1980 and returned home to work for the Mobile Community Action program, where she managed a summer lunch program and then the foster grandparents program. Then she managed a weekly newspaper, The New Times, and ran a printing company until 1996.
Vivian's husband, Michael A. Figures, died in 1996 after suffering a massive stroke. She has three adult sons.
