Mark Pryor was born in Fayetteville, Ark., and attended public schools in both Arkansas and the Washington, D.C., area. He earned his bachelor's degree in history at the University of Arkansas, and later a law degree there.

Pryor's family has a tradition of political involvement. His father, David, was Arkansas' governor from 1975 to 1979, and then was a U.S. senator for 18 years before retiring in 1997.

Mark Pryor worked in private practice at the Wright, Lindsey and Jennings law firm in Little Rock for eight years. He was elected to the state House of Representatives in 1990 and served two terms.

He was elected Arkansas' attorney general in 1998 and to the Senate in 2002.

He and his wife, Jill, have two children.
