Nancy Pelosi was born into a political family. Her father, Thomas D'Alesandro Jr., represented Maryland in the U.S. House for five terms.
She moved west and was named to the San Francisco Library Commission. She was leader of the Northern California Democratic Party from 1977 to 1981, and leader of the California Democratic Party from 1981 to 1983. She played a major role in helping bring the Democratic National Convention to San Francisco in 1984.
She was a leader of the 1986 Democratic national financial effort on behalf of U.S. Senate candidates.
Pelosi was first elected to the U.S. House in a special June 1987 election.
