Marilyn Musgrave grew up in rural Weld County, Colo., and graduated from Eaton High School. After graduating from Colorado State University, she taught school and raised four children.
She and her husband Steve also ran an agricultural hay business. She got her start in politics as a member of the Fort Morgan school board.
She was elected to the Colorado House in 1994 and again in 1996, then won a state Senate seat with 63 percent of the vote and became caucus chairman for Republicans. She was also past president of the Colorado Republican Women.
While in the Legislature, she fought for a 5 percent tax cut, eliminating the state marriage penalty and fought to exempt farm and ranch equipment and agricultural repair parts from estate taxes.
She was elected to the U.S. House in 2002.
