Neil Abercrombie was born in Buffalo, N.Y., and resides in Honolulu. He received a bachelor's degree in sociology from Union College in 1959, a master's degree in sociology in 1964 and a doctorate in American Studies in 1974 from the University of Hawaii.

He worked as a custodian at a preschool and as a probation officer. He was a college research and teaching assistant, lecturer, and visiting assistant professor.

He was elected to the Hawaii House of Representatives in 1974 and was re-elected in 1976. He was elected to the state Senate in 1978 and was re-elected in 1982. He was elected to the Honolulu City Council in 1988.

Abercrombie was first elected to a full term in the U.S. House in 1990, after serving for three months as an interim House member in late 1986. He had won a special election to fill the unexpired term of Democratic Rep. Cecil Heftel who resigned to run for governor.

He was returned to the House in 1990 and won re-election through in 2004. He was running with only token opposition for a ninth term in 2006.

Abercrombie and his wife, Nancie Caraway, have no children.
