Former Lt. Gov. Mazie Keiko Hirono was born in Fukushima, Japan. Hirono and her mother moved to Honolulu in 1955. Hirono received a bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of Hawaii in 1970. She received a law degree from Georgetown University Law School in 1978.
Hirono practiced law in Honolulu until she was elected to the Hawaii Legislature in 1980. She was elected lieutenant governor when she took office with Gov. Benjamin Cayetano took office in 1994.
After two terms as lieutenant governor, Hirono ran for governor in 2002. She narrowly defeated former state House Majority Leader Ed Case in the Democratic primary, but she lost to Republican Linda Lingle in the general election.
Hirono barely defeated a field of nine other Democrats to face state Sen. Bob Hogue for the 2nd District.
Hirono is married to Leighton Kim Oshima.
