Kim Schmett was born in Oakland City, Ind., and he now resides in Clive. He earned a bachelor's at Eastern Illinois University in 1975 and a law degree at the Illinois Institute of Technology-Chicago Kent College of Law in 1979.Schmett served in the Army from 1972 to 1974 during the Vietnam War. He practiced law in the early 1980s, and in 1983 was appointed a member of the Iowa Employment Appeal Board.
He served as a chief administrative law judge with the Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals from 1986 to 1996, and served for a couple of years as an investigations division administrator. He was appointed director of that department in 1996.
He served as chief of staff to former U.S. Rep. Greg Ganske from 1999 to 2003. He most recently served as the executive director of the Coalition for Family and Children's Services in Iowa.
