Walt Minnick was raised on a farm near Walla Walla, Wash., and now lives in the Hidden Springs neighborhood west of Boise.

Minnick earned a juris doctorate at Harvard Law School in 1969, a master's in business administration at Harvard Business School in 1966 and a bachelor's in economics at Whitman College in 1964.

Minnick worked as a Nixon White House staffer in the early 1970s before starting a 21-year career at a wood-products maker, TJ International, that ended in 1995, when he retired as president and chief executive officer. He is also co-founder and CEO of SummerWinds Garden Centers, Inc., with operations in Missouri, California and Arizona.

Minnick and his wife have four children.
