Sheldon Schafer was born July 9, 1948 in Salem, Ohio. he has lived in Peoria, Ill. for more than 30 years.
After graduating from Ohio State University with a bachelor's degree in astronomy in 1970, he left for south India to serve as a Peace Corps volunteer for two years. He returned to the United States and earned his masters in science education from Wagner College in New York.
Schafer works as the vice president of education and the director of planetarium at Lakeview Museum of Arts & Sciences in Peoria.
He is a founding member of the Peoria Area Green Party, the regional coordinator for Rich Whitney's 2006 gubernatorial bid and serves as chairman for the party's State Central Committee.
He volunteers for organizations including Haiti Mission Connection, St. Thomas Church, Peoria Astronomical Society, Peoria Academy of Sciences and Peoria Public Schools.
Schafer is married and has two adult daughters.
