Danny K. Davis was born in Parkdale, Ark., and resides in Chicago. Davis received a bachelor's degree from Arkansas AM&N College in 1961, a master's degree from Chicago State University in 1968 and his doctorate from Union Institute in 1977.

Davis was a public school teacher in Chicago, 1962-69. He was a Chicago city alderman, 1979-90, and a Cook County commissioner, 1990-96, before being elected to the U.S. House in 1996.

Davis unsuccessfully challenged Democratic Rep. Cardiss Collins in the Democratic primaries in 1984 and 1986. He also ran against Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley in a Democratic primary in 1991 and lost.

Davis and his wife, Vera, have two children.
