Steve Cox was born in Memphis, Tenn. His career began as a U.S. State Department clerk in 1964. He served in the U.S. Army from 1967 to 1969, which included a yearlong stint in Vietnam. He was awarded the Bronze Star.
In 1971 he joined a restaurant development business with his father. Steve completed an Associate of Arts degree program at Spartanburg Methodist College in May 1980.
Cox returned to the State Department in 1980 until he retired in 2003. He moved from Washington, D.C. to Urbana, Illinois.
Since then, Cox has volunteered in service organizations such as a Court Appointed Special Advocates, Meals on Wheels, and as an elder at McKinley Memorial Presbyterian Church in Champaign, Ill.
Cox and his wife, Nancy, have four children.
