Jill Long Thompson was born Jill Long in Warsaw, Indiana and currently lives on a farm near Argos in north-central Indiana. She received her bachelor's degree from Valparaiso University in 1974, her M.B.A. from Indiana University in 1978 and her Ph.D. in business from Indiana University in 1984. She served in Congress from 1989 to 1995 and was Undersecretary of Agriculture from 1995 to 2000 in the Clinton administration.

She married her husband, Don Thompson, a commercial airline pilot, in 1985, and has two step children through him.
