Dan Burton was born in Indianapolis, and still resides there. He attended Indiana University and Cincinnati Bible Seminary, then served in the Army from 1956-57 and in the Army Reserves from 1957-62. He worked as a real estate and insurance agent and founded the Dan Burton Insurance Agency in 1968.

Burton served in the Indiana House, from 1967-68 and 1977-80. He served in the Indiana Senate from 1969-70, and 1981-82. Burton was first elected to the U.S. House in 1982.

He has three children from his former wife, Barbara, who died in May 2002 at age 65.
