Mary Etta Ruley was born in Gas City, Ind., and lives in the family farmhouse where she was raised. She graduated from Mississinewa High School and earned a degree in economics from the University of Maryland. She was president of two large consulting companies and was a staff member for former Democratic Congressman J. Edward Roush in Washington, D.C. She also served on the staff of the House Committee on Government Operations and was an analyst at the Center for Naval Analyses.
When she returned to Indiana's 5th District in 1999, Ruley became vice president for education for Grant County's Business-Education Partnership. In 2000, she and a group of math and science teachers proposed a regional science center. Ruley continues to work on that project and also runs two small businesses.
