Andre D. Carson was born in Indianapolis and still lives there. He earned a bachelor of arts in management of criminal justice from Concordia University in Wisconsin in 2003 and a master of science in business management from Indiana Wesleyan University in 2005.
Carson is a former investigator for the Indiana State Excise Police, which enforces alcoholic beverage laws. He was raised by his grandmother, the late Congresswoman Julia Carson, in Indianapolis.
Carson first entered politics as a member of the Indianapolis City-County Council, where he served from August 2007 until March 2008. He then won a special election to fill the 7th Congressional District seat left vacant by his grandmother's death on Dec. 15, 2007.
He and his wife, Mariama, have one daughter.
