John Bradley Ellsworth was born in rural Huntingburg, Ind., where he lived until he was 10. His father moved the family to Evansville in 1967 when he took a job at Alcoa.
He graduated from Indiana State University with a degree in sociology in 1982 and entered the police academy. He married his college sweetheart during a weekend-leave pass, honeymooned in downtown Evansville and returned classes the following day.
Since finishing his undergraduate degree, he has worked continuously for the Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Department, first a deputy and for the last eight years as sheriff.
Ellsworth is married and has one daughter.
