Gregory Justin Goode grew up in Terre Haute, the district's second-largest city, has two degrees from Indiana State University and is working toward a doctorate from Virginia Tech University in public administration and policy.
He began his political career as a legislative aide to Republican Rep. Ed Pease, who represented the Terre Haute area in the state's old 7th District, from 1996 until 2000. He was then chief of staff to Pease's successor, GOP Rep. Brian Kerns, and he joined Indiana State in 2002 as its lobbyist with the state Legislature and the Indiana congressional delegation.
Goode resigned from Indiana State in September 2007 to campaign full-time for the congressional seat.
He and his wife, Leslie, are parents of a son.
