James Bordonaro was born in Providence, R.I., and now resides in Emporia. He earned a bachelor's at the University of Central Florida in 1989 and juris doctorate at Florida State University in 1997.

Bordonaro worked as a law clerk in the Florida court system and as a prosecutor for the state's nursing board. He later opened his own law office.

Bordonaro moved to Emporia in 2005 with his wife, where she took a job as an art therapy professor at Emporia State University and he became active in the local Democratic Party. He was also a substitute teacher and started a seasonal business selling vegetables and houseplants.
