Charles Boustany was born in New Orleans and resides in Lafayette. He received an undergraduate degree from the University of Southwestern Louisiana (now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette) in 1978 and a medical degree from Louisiana State University in 1982.

Boustany was a resident in the Louisiana Charity Hospital System and at the University of Rochester in Rochester, N.Y. After he completed the residency in 1990, he returned to Louisiana and established a private practice. He was a heart surgeon from 1982 to 2004.

He served no elected political posts prior to becoming a member of the U.S. House of Representatives in 2004. Boustany served on the Lafayette Parish Republican Executive Committee from 1996 to 2001. He was vice chairman of the local Bush-Cheney re-election campaign.

Boustany and his wife, Bridget, have two children.
