Charlie Melancon was born in and still resides in Napoleonville, La. He received a bachelor's degree in agri-business from the University of Southwestern Louisiana, now the University of Louisiana-Lafayette.
He served in the Louisiana House from 1987 to 1993, and was president of the American Sugar Cane League from 1993 to 2003.
Melancon and his wife, Peachy, have two children.
