John Olver was born in Honesdale, Pa., and resides in Amherst, Mass. He received a bachelor's degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1955, a master's degree from Tufts University in 1956 and a doctorate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1961.

He was a professor at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst from 1961 to 1969. He served in the Massachusetts House from 1968 to 1973. He served in the Massachusetts Senate from 1973 to 1990.

He was elected to the U.S. House in a June 1991 special election and elected to a full term in 1992.

Olver and his wife, Rose, have a daughter.
