William Delahunt was born in Quincy, Mass., where he still resides. He received a bachelor's degree in 1963 from Middlebury College and a law degree in 1967 from Boston College Law School.

Delahunt was an assistant clerk of the Norfolk County Superior Court, 1968-70. He served on the Quincy City Council, 1971-72, then rose to the Massachusetts state Legislature, where he served from 1973-76. He practiced law. In 1975, he was appointed Norfolk County district attorney.

He was elected district attorney in 1976 and re-elected to that post for five more four-year terms. Delahunt was first elected to the U.S. House in 1996.

He is divorced with two daughters.
