Chellie Pingree was born in Minneapolis, Minn., and she now resides on North Haven Island. She earned a bachelor's at the College of the Atlantic, a small environmentally conscious school in Bar Harbor.

Pingree moved to North Haven Island and ran a small farm with her former husband. She started a yarn business in 1981 and sold it in 1993.

Pingree served on the local school board and as tax assessor before being approached to run for state Senate in 1991. She was elected and served four two-year terms, the last two terms as majority leader.

Pingree served as the national president and CEO of Common Cause, a non-partisan citizen activist group, from 2003 to 2007. She is a co-owner of a bed and breakfast and restaurant on North Haven.

Pingree is divorced and she has three children. Her daughter Hannah serves as majority leader in the state House.
