Carl M. Levin was born in Detroit, where he still resides. He graduated from Detroit's Central High School in 1952. He earned a bachelor's degree in 1956 from Swarthmore College and a law degree from Harvard Law School in 1959.

He worked as an attorney in Detroit, 1959-64. He was assistant state attorney general and general counsel for the Michigan Civil Rights Commission, 1964-67.

He was chief appellate defender for the city of Detroit, 1968-69. He served on the Detroit City Council, 1970-77, and served as president, 1974-77.

He taught at Wayne State University and the University of Detroit.

He was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1978 and was re-elected in 1984, 1990, 1996 and 2002.

Levin and his wife, Barbara Halpern, have three daughters.
