Ike Skelton was born in Lexington, Mo., where he still lives. He received an associate's degree from Wentworth Military Academy in 1951. He earned a bachelor's degree in 1953 and a law degree in 1956, both from the University of Missouri. He also attended the University of Edinburgh in Scotland in 1953.
He was a prosecuting attorney for Lafayette County (Mo.) from 1957 to 1960, and was special assistant attorney general for Missouri from 1961 to 1963. He was elected to the Missouri Senate in 1970.
He was first elected to the U.S. House in 1976.
Skelton's wife, Susan, died in August 2005. They had been married 44 years and have three sons.
