Bill Haas was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and now resides in St. Louis. He earned a bachelor's in English at Yale University in 1966 and a juris doctorate in corporate transactional law at Harvard Law School in 1972.

Haas is a longtime St. Louis lawyer who has been involved in politics and public service for many years, starting when he was a VISTA volunteer in 1968. He served as a member of the St. Louis School Board from 1997 through 2005.

Haas is a professor of law, ethics and business at Harris Stowe State University in St. Louis.

In addition to serving on the school board, Haas has run unsuccessfully for Congress once, state representative three times, St. Louis mayor four times and alderman once. His first effort at politics came when he ran unsuccessfully for the school board in Cleveland in 1981.

Haas received 30.7 percent of the vote in this year's primary to defeat four other challengers in the Democratic primary and will face incumbent Republican Rep. Todd Akin in November.

Haas is single and has a son in college.
