Richard Monroe was born in Monett and now resides in Springfield. He earned a classics degree at Princeton in 1975 and a juris doctorate at the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1978.

Monroe served in active duty in the Army for three years, trying court martial cases in Missouri, Kansas, Illinois and Kentucky. He became an assistant prosecutor for Greene County in 1982 before becoming a federal prosecutor for the Western District of Missouri, serving in that role until he retired in February.

Monroe beat a single challenger for the Democratic nomination in Missouri's 7th District in this year's primary, with 77.7 percent of the vote. He will face longtime Republican House leader Roy Blunt in the November election.

Monroe and his wife, Susan, own a retail business in Springfield. They have one daughter and one granddaughter.
