Joel Gill was born in St. Joseph, MO and he lives in Pinkens, Miss. His father was in the cattle business, and the Gill family moved to Mississippi when Joel was young. Joel Gill graduated in 1973 from Millsaps College, a private Methodist school in Jackson, MS.

He worked as manager of a service station in a Jackson suburb in the early 1970s, then joined the family cattle business in Jackson in 1973. He moved to the small Mississippi Delta town of Pickens, about 30 miles north of Jackson, in 1980.

Gill is running for an open seat in Mississippi's 3rd Congressional District, which stretches across the central part of the state. Republican Chip Pickering, who first won the seat in 1996, decided not to seek re-election.

Gill and his wife, Ann, have two adult children.
