John Marion McCay III was born in Gulfport, MS and moved back there in June 2008 after living in other cities in south Mississippi. He graduated in 1997 from the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg. He started graduate school in theology at Emory University in Atlanta, and then transferred to Memphis Theological Seminary in Memphis, Tenn. He received his master of divinity degree in Memphis in 2000. McCay is working on a doctorate from Trinity Theological Seminary in Indiana.

McCay has worked for several United Methodist Churches in south Mississippi since 1994.

He is challenging Democrat Gene Taylor in south Mississippi's 4th Congressional District. Taylor is a conservative "Blue Dog" Democrat and has held the seat since winning a special election in 1989.

McCay is not married and does not have children.
