Bennie Thompson was born in the Jackson, Miss., suburb of Bolton and has lived in the small town his entire life. He earned an undergraduate degree at Tougaloo College and a master's degree at Jackson State University. He has completed coursework for a doctorate in public administration at the University of Southern Mississippi.
He was a teacher and served as Bolton alderman and mayor and Hinds County supervisor before being elected to Congress.
Thompson and his wife, London, have one daughter.
