Tim Mathern was born in Edgeley, N.D., and grew up in a family of 13 children on a dairy and grain farm in southeastern North Dakota. He attended Cardinal Muench, a college and Roman Catholic seminary in Fargo, before taking a bachelor's degree at North Dakota State University. He has a master's degree in social work from the University of Nebraska and a master's in public administration from Harvard University, which he attended from 1998 to 2000.
Mathern was a social worker and administrator for Catholic Family Service, a Fargo-based social services organization, for 27 years. He was administrator of the Church of the Nativity in Fargo from 2000 to 2006, when Mathern went to work for Prairie St. John's, a Fargo psychiatric hospital, as a vice president for public policy and nonprofit development.
Mathern is married to Lorene Randall Mathern. They have four children.
