Adrian Smith was born in Scottsbluff, Neb. and is a fourth-generation resident of the congressional district he represents.

He spent a majority of his young life in Gering, graduating from Gering High School in 1989. He went on to receive his bachelor's degree in marketing education at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1993.

While a college student, Smith worked as a staff intern in the Nebraska governor's office and later as a page in the Nebraska Legislature. There, he began to develop his interest in policy making.

After college, Smith moved back to Gering where he worked as a project manager in staff development for Educational Service Unit No. 13. Just a year after graduating college, he began serving on the Gering City Council. He also began working to support local organizations striving to preserve the history and heritage of Western Nebraska, including the Riverside Zoological Society, North Platte Valley Historical Society and the Wyo-Braska Museum of Natural History, among others.

After four years on the city council, Smith moved on to win the District 48 seat in the Legislature. In 2002, he was unopposed in his bid for re-election. He served as delegate to the Republican National Convention in 2000 and 2004.

Smith was unable to seek a third term in 2006 because of term limits.

He was elected to his first federal office in 2006.

Smith is not married.
