Jim Esch, the oldest of six children, was born in Omaha, Neb. and currently resides there.
He attended Creighton Preparatory School in Omaha and, later, Creighton University, both Jesuit schools.
Upon graduation from law school in 2000, Esch worked for Steier Group, which provides professional development and public relations counsel to nonprofit organizations. In 2003, Esch worked for the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce and served as director for the Greater Omaha Economic Development Partnership. He resigned in 2005 prior to announcing his candidacy as a Democrat for Nebraska's 2nd District congressional seat. The following year, he lost to Republican incumbent Lee Terry, who won the election with 45 percent of the vote.
Esch has served on the Boards of several Catholic charities, including the Siena Francis House homeless shelter, Heart Ministry outreach program, and Black Students' Catholic Scholarship Fund. Esch is also a member of the Omaha Parks & Recreation Advisory Committee.
