Jeff Fortenberry was born in Baton Rouge, La., and moved to Nebraska in 1995.

He earned a bachelor's degree in economics from Louisiana State University in 1982, a master's degree in of public policy from Georgetown University in 1986 and a master's degree in theology from Franciscan University of Steubenville in 1995.

Before moving to Nebraska, Fortenberry was assistant director of the Downtown Development District in Baton Rouge and a research associate and economist at the Gulf South Research Institute now known as Gulf Engineers, in Baton Rouge.

Fortenberry served on the Lincoln City Council from 1997 to 2001.

He was elected to the U.S. House in 2004.

He and his wife, Celeste, have five daughters.
