Christopher H. Smith was born in Rahway, N.J., and resides in Hamilton, N.J. He received a bachelor's degree in 1975 from Trenton State College, and studied at Worcester College in England. He worked for his family's sporting goods business.

From 1976 to 1978, he was executive director of New Jersey Right to Life.

Smith was elected to the U.S. House in 1980, and was re-elected to 11 consecutive terms.

Smith and his wife, Marie, have four children.
