Jon Porter was born in Fort Dodge, Iowa, and grew up in Humboldt, Iowa. He attended Briar Cliff College (now Briar Cliff University) in Sioux City, and later moved to southern Nevada.
In 1982, Porter became an agent for Farmers Insurance Group, and is currently one of Farmers' top-ranking district managers. He supervises more than 30 Farmers Insurance agents throughout southern Nevada.
He also has been active in the Southern Nevada Water Authority.
Porter and his wife, Laurie, have two children.
