Dean Heller was born in Castro Valley, Calif., and grew up in Carson City. Heller earned a degree in business administration from the University of Southern California in 1985.
He worked as an institutional stockbroker and as a broker-trader on the Pacific Stock Exchange before getting into Nevada politics.
Heller served two terms in the Nevada Assembly, from 1990 to 1994. He was elected secretary of state in 1994, and re-elected in 1998 and again in 2002.
Heller and his wife, Lynne, have four children.
