Jill Derby was born in Berkeley, Calif., and now resides in Gardnerville. She earned a bachelor's in dental hygiene at University of California-San Francisco, a bachelor's in anthropology at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas and a master's and a doctorate in anthropology at University of California-Davis.

Derby spent her early childhood in Lovelock before moving to California where her father trained Air Force pilots. She spent three years in Saudi Arabia where she learned Arabic.

She has taught at Western Nevada Community College, Sierra Nevada College, the National Judicial College and the University of California-San Francisco.

Derby was elected to the Nevada State Board of Regents, where she served 18 years before launching her first congressional campaign in 2006.

She served as chairwoman of the Nevada Democratic Party from 2007 to 2008.

Derby and her husband, Steve Talbot, a veterinarian, have two children.
