Yvette Clarke was born in Brooklyn to Caribbean immigrant parents. Clarke gravitated to politics at a young age, winning a congressional internship while still a student at Oberlin College.
She served as an aide to several politicians and worked for a Bronx economic development agency before being elected to the City Council in 2001.
She won a hard-fought Democratic primary in the Brooklyn-centered 11th District.
