Eliot Engel was born in the Bronx, N.Y., where he still resides. He received a bachelor's degree in history from Hunter-Lehman College in 1969, a master's degree in guidance and counseling from Herbert H. Lehman College in 1973, and a law degree from New York Law School in 1987.

He was a teacher and guidance counselor in the New York public school system. In 1977, he was elected to the New York Legislature, serving from 1977 to 1988.

He was first elected to the U.S. House in 1988.

Engel and his wife, Pat, have three children.
