John Hall was born in Baltimore and grew up in Elmira, N.Y. He is best-known as one of the founding members of Orleans, a popular 1970s-era rock band. Hall co-wrote the pop songs "Dance With Me" and "Still the One," both of which still receive extensive radio play. He's also worked as a producer for artists including Bonnie Raitt and Janis Joplin.

Hall is also a longtime environmental activist who helped found Musicians for Safe Energy. In the late 1980s, while living in Saugerties, he was elected to the Ulster County legislature after organizing opposition to a 200-acre solid waste dump. Hall also served two terms on the Saugerties Board of Education.

In 2004, Hall publicly called on President Bush's re-election campaign to cease playing "Still the One" at the president's campaign rallies.

Hall lives in Dover Plains with his wife, Pamela. He has a daughter from a previous marriage.
