Peter King was born in New York City, and resides in Seaford. He received a bachelor's degree in history from St. Francis College in 1965 and a law degree from Notre Dame University in 1968.
He went into private law practice and served as a Hempstead town councilman before first being elected as Nassau County comptroller in 1981. King ran unsuccessfully for state attorney general in 1986.
In 1992, he won election to the U.S. House.
King and his wife, Rosemary, have two children.
