Carolyn Maloney was born in Greensboro, N.C., and lives in New York City. She received a bachelor's degree in history and literature from Greensboro College in 1968.

Maloney was a public school teacher in New York City, 1972-74. She became a special assistant in career and occupational education with the New York City Board of Education in 1974. She left that post in 1978 to become a legislative aide to the New York state Assembly Committee on Housing.

In 1979, Maloney went to work for the state Senate minority leader, first as director of his advisory council and later as director of special projects. She served on the New York City Council, 1982-92.

She was first elected to the U.S. House in 1992.

Maloney and her husband, Clifton, have two daughters.
