Gregory Meeks was born in Harlem and grew up in public housing. He now resides in Far Rockaway in Queens. Meeks received a bachelor's degree from Adelphi University in 1975 and a law degree from Howard University in 1978.

He worked as an assistant Queens County (N.Y.) prosecutor, and a state worker's compensation judge. He served in the New York Assembly, 1993-98.

He was first elected to the U.S. House in a February 1998 special election to serve the remainder of Democrat Floyd Flake's term. Flake, a minister, retired to devote more time to his church in Queens, N.Y.

Meeks and his wife, Simone-Marie, have three daughters.
