Tim Ryan was born in Niles where he now resides. He played quarterback in his hometown at John F. Kennedy High School in Warren, Ohio.
Ryan graduated from Bowling Green State University with a degree in political science and earned his law degree from the Franklin Pierce Law Center in Concord, N.H.
Ryan worked for Rep. James A. Traficant as a congressional aide, 1995-97. Traficant was ousted from Congress and sentenced in 2002 to eight years in prison on his racketeering and bribery conviction.
Ryan was elected to the Ohio Senate in 2001 and was elected to Congress in 2002, then re-elected in 2004.
He married Julie Stitzel, who had served as his deputy campaign manager, on Aug. 22, 2003. The couple has no children. They were separated in 2006 with a divorce pending.
