Michael Turner was born in 1960 in Dayton, Ohio, and lives in nearby Centerville. His parents moved to Dayton from eastern Kentucky in the 1950s. His father worked at General Motors Corp. for 42 years, and his mother was a schoolteacher.
Turner attended Belmont High School and graduated from Ohio Northern University with a degree in political science. He earned a law degree from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland and his master's in business administration from the University of Dayton.
Turner served for two terms as mayor of Dayton, from 1994 to 2002. He was elected to the U.S. House in 2002.
Turner practices Taekwondo, a martial art, and at one time was part-owner of a Taekwondo school.
He and his wife, Lori, have two daughters.
